The Urinary System of the Camel

The Camel has a special kidney that can concentrate the urine more then sea water but less then the dessert rat. Because of this, drinking salt water does not harm the camel. A dehydrated camel can replace water within minutes and is quickly absorbed in to the kidneys blood stream. The camel is adapt to scarce water but the kidney can also adapt to rapid dehydration and does not lead to demyelination of the brain. The camel can store water in its three stomachs (2.5 gallons) and use that when there is no water. The camel can lose 40 percent of its body weight before it becomes distressed. The camel can go for 5-7 days before having to drink. When the camel does drink it can drink 21 gallons in 10 minutes.

fun fact; camels do not store water in their humps but fat in their humps.
